1.The Recorder in Bach’s Cantatas

10:00 am – 11:30 am Pacific/1:00 – 2:30 pm Eastern.
January 24, 31, February 7, 14

Take all four or as many as you like. Each individual class is $25.00.

Each class will be recorded for study and for those who can’t attend the live Zoom class.

This class will focus on two of Bach’s cantatas that use the recorder. We’ll work on the recorder parts and learn about the context and history of each cantata. We’ll play along with parts of recordings.

January 24: BWV 161 – Komm, du süße Todesstunde

Bach composed Komm, du süße Todesstunde (Come, you sweet hour of death), in Weimar for the 16th Sunday after Trinity. It was probably first performed on 27 September 1716. The cantata is scored for alto and tenor soloists, a four-part choir, and two recorders, strings, and continuo.

January 31: Continuation of BWV 161

February 7: BWV 46 – Schauet doch und sehet

Schauet doch und sehet, ob irgend ein Schmerz sei (Behold and see, if there be any sorrow), was composed for the tenth Sunday after Trinity and was first performed on August 1, 1723 in Leipzig. The cantata is scored for alto, tenor, and bass soloists, a four-part choir, and an ensemble of a corno da tirarsi (slide trumpet), two recorders, two oboes da caccia, strings, and continuo.

February 14: Continuation of BWV 46

For upper intermediate to advanced recorders.
Alto recorder. Pitch: a=440, but let me know if you have an alto at a415. There may be some opportunities to play along with recordings at a415.

2. You Can Do It! Play Along with Me
1:30 pm – 2:15 pm Pacific/4:30 – 5:15 pm Eastern.

January 24, 31, February 7, 14

Take all four or many as you like. Each individual class is $15.00.

Each class will be recorded for study and for those who can’t attend the live Zoom class.

This class is meant to help low intermediate players learn to play in an ensemble. Each 45-minute class will move from very easy pieces to an intermediate level of difficulty. You’ll get music in advance and in class you’ll play along with me or my recordings. I’ll give tips on how to keep going but we’ll keep the talking to a minimum so we can play. Never fear, there will be time for your questions during the class.

For low intermediate players of instruments at A440. Play-along recordings will be on soprano, alto, tenor, and bass recorders, at an octave above written pitch.

3. Next Level Online

January 24, 31, February 7, 14
