Greetings! Read on for information about my August 2021 Zoom classes.
I hope you can join me for classes in August. To register, please scroll to the bottom of this message to find the registration form and information on how to pay.
You may enroll for as many or as few classes as you wish.
1. Magnifying Glass on Ensemble Skills III
10:00 am – 11:30 am Pacific/1:00 pm – 2:30 pm Eastern.
August 17-31, 2021
Take them all or as many as you like. Each individual class is $25.00. Participation in previous Magnifying Glass on Ensemble Skills classes is not a prerequisite for enrolling in this class.
This class will focus on rhythm skills, especially those in Renaissance music. You’ll play along with me on duos, and with my GarageBand recordings of 15th-, 16th-, and 17th-century dance music, chansons, tenor lieder, madrigals, and more.
August 17: dance music from the early 17th century and songs from early 16th century Germany. Dances from Praetorius’ Terpsichore and works by Senfl.
August 24: early 16th-century Italian madrigal by Verdelot and late 16th-century bicinium by Morley.
August 31: 15th-century rhythms in the music of Dufay and Landini.
For intermediate to upper intermediate recorder players.
2. Est-ce Mars? Scheidt and Staeps
1:30 pm – 3:00 pm Pacific/4:30 – 6:00 pm Eastern. Take them all or as many as you like. Each individual class is $25.00.
The French song “Est-ce Mars?” was set by many composers. This class will focus on two wildly different compositions – an early 17th-century five-part canzona by Samuel Scheidt and the mid 20th-century Partita in C for four recorders by Hans Ulrich Staeps.
August 17: Introduction to both the Scheidt and the Staeps. Plan to play through both as much as time allows.
August 24: more in-depth work on parts of both pieces.
August 31: continuation of in-depth work and play-through of both pieces
For upper intermediate to advanced instrumentalists. Play-along recordings will be on recorders at 4-foot pitch, an octave higher than viol and dulcian consort so those instruments may want to play lower parts.
Music: iI you don’t have your own copy of the Staeps Partita in C contact the Von Huene shop at 617-277-8690 or Honeysuckle Music at 651-644-8545, both of which have placed orders for the music. You might also try Courtly Music at 800-274-2443.
If you prefer to contact these shops by email use the following addresses:
Contact the von Huene shop at firstname.lastname@example.org

This music is still under copyright so you must own your own copy. Ask for Moeck EM 309 Staeps Partita in C. If you can’t locate a copy by August 10th let me know.
The Scheidt (Canzon Super Cantionem Gallicam – Est-ce Mars) is available in a good LPM edition. It comes in a larger set of canzonas and dances, but may also be available as a single piece. I’ll be using the LPM edition for my recording and I encourage you to purchase your own copy if you don’t own it. If that is not possible the piece is available at https://imslp.org/wiki/Canzon_super_Cantionem_Gallicam%2C_SSWV_67_(Scheidt%2C_Samuel)
